Bruno Spengler and the Euro Formula 3 Series to race in Hockenheim
Montreal, Canada, September 30th, 2003 -- The penultimate round of the 2003 Formula 3 Euro Series will be held this weekend in Hockenheim, Germany as part of the grand finale of the DTM -- the spectacular German touring car championship. Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler scored his best result in Formula 3 two weeks ago in Zandvoort, Holland with a second-place finish and will drive as hard as possible this weekend to win his first race in this extremely competitive international series.
Spengler will only have Friday's 60-minute free practice session to get to grips with the 4.57-kilometre circuit of Hockenheim because he did not compete in the two days of private testing and the opening race of the year in April due to a broken vertebrae -- the consequence of a high speed crash while testing his F3 car in Dijon, France. "I drove in Hockenheim last year in the German Formula Renault 2000 Series but it was on the short circuit located inside the Stadium," said the Canadian who captured the Fran-Am North American title last season. "We'll need to work very hard during Friday's practice session to learn the track. But in comparison to Zandvoort, passing is possible here in Hockenheim, especially in the new hairpin corner that follows the long straight."
The 19-year old Mercedes-Benz driver is confident to perform well. "My team mate clinched the pole here for the race held earlier in April. That proves that we have a good set-up and the car is fast. The DTM saloon cars will also compete this weekend since they leave a lot of rubber on the track, we'll have more grip than usual. However, weather could play a role as rain is highly possible at this time of year. But I don't really care about the rain. I always give my best, whatever the conditions may be."
The first race will be held Saturday afternoon and the second one is scheduled for Sunday morning. Spengler -- who is currently 10th in the drivers' standings despite having missed two races - drives a Dallara/Mercedes-Benz car prepared by French team ASM.
