One-two win for Volkswagen drivers Mailleux and Vernay
First Volkswagen one-two victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series: Franck Mailleux and Jean Karl Vernay (both from France) clinched places one and two at Brands Hatch, United Kingdom, on Sunday. After a perfect start from the front row the two Signature team-mates finished the race with a commanding one-two win. The day before Mailleux and Vernay had occupied places seven and eight, securing the best grid positions as well as further championship points.
Italian Edoardo Mortara, who had clinched the first victory for the new Volkswagen Formula 3 engine in Pau, France, finished both Saturday's and Sunday's race in fourth place and - remaining in the position of the runner-up in the standings - continues to keep the title fight open. Mailleux and Vernay moved up to positions five and ten in the championship. The Chinese Congfu Cheng (RC Motorsport) in ninth place was the fourth driver "powered by Volkswagen" to capture a place among the top ten, which his team-mate Jens Klingmann (Leimen) in eleventh place barely missed on Saturday.
Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director:
"The one-two victory clinched by Franck Mailleux and Jean Karl Vernay is a very nice exploit in the young history of the Volkswagen Formula 3 engine. We intensively worked on the application of the engine and optimum use of the standard tyres, and in addition there's the very good vehicle set-up performed by Signature. The whole package has made us competitive throughout the weekend. Not only by claiming victory but also by setting the second-quickest lap time in the race on Sunday we proved how good our package is. For the upcoming races I expect the title fight to remain close between teams Signature and ART as well as between Edoardo Mortara and Nico Hulkenberg."

Qualifying: place 11 - race 1: place 7 - race 2: place 1
"I'm incredibly happy about my first victory with Volkswagen and Signature. The hard work of the engineers and mechanics paid off. As early as on Friday I was sure that we'd be clinching a good result here. The qualifying was less than perfect for me personally, but in the first race I was able to recover the crucial places. On Sunday I managed a perfect start and, after that, had a flawless race."
#30 - Jean Karl Vernay (F) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature
Qualifying: place 13 - race 1: place 8 - race 2: place 2
"On the whole this was a very good weekend. In qualifying we had more potential but the situation here was extremely close. The two races went very well for me. In Sunday's race Franck's start was a bit better than mine and afterwards he was slightly quicker than I as well. Then I concentrated on finishing as the runner-up. I had big blisters on my hands and it was pretty painful moving my car at the limit."
#7 - Edoardo Mortara (I) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature
Qualifying: place 8 - race 1: place 4 - race 2: place 4
"I'm satisfied with my two fourth places. In qualifying I was among the front runners, I had two perfect starts and two good races. We showed that we're still serious contenders. We want to continue doing that at the two upcoming races as well, on which I will fully concentrate. The final tally will only be prepared at the end."
