DREAM START EARNS MORTARA SUPERB WIN

BRANDS HATCH (GBR) 4 SEPTEMBER 2010: Formula 3 Euro Series leader Edoardo Mortara won Race 1 at Brands Hatch today, having started third on the grid.

The Italian made a stellar getaway to go between front-row team-mates Laurens Vanthoor and Marco Whitmann as they sped to the first corner. Pole-sitter Vanthoor defended his line by pushing Edo right to the outside, but Mortara held his nerve in Paddock Hill Bend's treacherous braking area to pass the Belgian around the outside and then accelerated down the hill and up to Druids.

From there on, the series leader was uncatchable. He finished the 41 lap race four seconds ahead of Vanthoor, who was followed by Whittmann to earn the Signature-Volkswagen team a podium lock-out.

It's Edo's sixth Race 1 victory from seven rounds this year, and he's currently 26 points ahead of Whittmann in the title chase.

Race position: 1 / Grid position: 3 / Fastest lap: 0:41.014, lap 27 / Cloudy but dry, 18° ambient and 19° track temperature / Drivers' championship standing: =1st, 87 points

EDOARDO MORTARA: "A fantastic result for me today. I made a dream start to take the lead through the first corner. Paddock Hill Bend is a very tricky corner so I needed big balls to pass Laurens around the outside. Laurens defended his line but was very fair, so I didn't sweat too much. From there, the race was mine. It's so impossible to overtake here that I knew my one chance of victory was in that corner - so I took it."

"The car was really incredible today, so many thanks to my team for a great effort. It's been the best possible result for Signature-Volkswagen and we're looking forward to a good race tomorrow, though it will be difficult to get on the podium again given the reverse grid."
