Hynes predicts bright future for Arab driver as he heads for debut in F3 Euro series
Dubai, UAE, 20th April, 2007: The man who helped guide Kimi Raikkonen into Formula One racing believes Basil Shaaban has nothing to fear tomorrow (Saturday) when he makes his debut in the Formula 3 Euro Series.
While Shaaban is taking a cautious approach to the opening round of the 2007 series at Hockenheim, Germany, specialist instructor Marc Hynes is already saying that the driver boosted by a new sponsorship agreement with Shell could go all the way to the top.
Hynes, who won the British Formula Three title ahead of Jenson Button, has had a big influence on Raikkonen's career and is now coaching Shaaban in his bid to become the first Arab driver to reach Formula One.
"I'm looking forward to working with basil throughout the F3 Euro series," he said. "I think that he will have a very good season. He has some catching up to due to after missing some testing but will benefit from a stable environment and a good team.
"The competition is very strong and this is the first major test of a driver's F1 potential. I am sure as the season develops and Basil grows in confidence he will challenge for top positions. I am always very impressed by his dedication and focus. With enough backing there is no doubt he can make it to F1."
Shaaban, born in Beirut and raised in Abu Dhabi, makes his competitive debut in the Shell-sponsored Dallara-Merecedes-Benz in the first of this weekend's two races at that famous Hockenheimring tomorrow (Saturday).
