TEAM VIP PETFOODS' HOME TRACK SHAKEDOWN AHEAD OF NURBURGRING
Just a day before departing for their second Nurburgring 24 hour campaign in Germany, one-half of the returning Team VIP Petfoods line-up will enjoy a home-track shakedown - with team owner Tony Quinn and lead driver Craig Baird strapping in for Queensland Raceway's Queensland 500 Club Enduro this Saturday.
Although the 997-based Porsche 991 GT3 Cup car Baird and Quinn will share over the 500 kilometres is clearly eclipsed by the RSR weapon they will pilot with Klark Quinn and Kevin Bell in Germany, the VIP Petfoods duo plans to benefit from spending some extra miles with its similar componentry.
"This weekend will be a bit of a Nurburgring shakedown for Tony and I, coming the weekend before our second run in Germany," said Baird.
"Running one of the Carrera Cup cars, whilst not the same as what we will be running in Germany, will give us a chance to put some extra miles under our belts with aspects such as the gear box, which is the same as in the new car.
"Tony was really keen to get some more time in the car with limited testing available with the new RSR, and the Queensland 500 is well-timed for us in relation to Germany as we fly out the day after.
"This is really just another step along the way in our commitment to being as ready as possible for next weekend, to give us the best chance possible of bettering last year's ninth on debut.
"Of course, it would still be great to win here, especially as Queensland Raceway is our home track."
The day-night event gets underway at Queensland Raceway from 2.30pm, following two qualifying sessions, and will see the estimated 35 teams spend the final hour in darkness on the fast, yet difficult 3.21 kilometre circuit.
Queensland Raceway only last Thursday hosted the launch of Team VIP Petfoods new weapon for its international arsenal -- the Porsche 991 GT3 RSR (Type 997), the only one of its kind in Australia.
The new car's race debut will be the second German assault for the team following on from their remarkable ninth on debut in 2006 for which they received international recognition.
