Strong debut with VW in Nurburgring 24 hours
Podium finish for Carlo van Dam
NURBURG - Carlo van Dam and his team mates have today clinched third place in the SP3T-class (cars with two litre turbocharged engines) for the Volkswagen-works team. Together with German Alfrid Heger, China's Cheng Congfu en Frenchman Franck Mailleux, the Dutchman steered a Scirocco GT24 into the top three. For Carlo it was his first outing on the famous Nordschleife, the old, over 22 kilometre long Nurburging, which attracted 235.000 spectators this weekend.
"I am really impressed with this event", Carlo says. "The track is fantastic of course, but also the ambiance cannot be compared to anything else. There is such a large crowd and everywhere alongside the circuit you can see the camping places and the barbecues. Sometimes I just drove through clouds of smoke and I could smell the sausages! For Volkswagen this is an important race and our team comprised something like a hundred people. It is great to be asked to be part of such a huge operation and I think we can look back at a good race. Alfrid [Heger] is a true veteran here, but for myself and my other two team mates this event was a new experience. That is why we are happy with the result. In the night the right front suspension had to be changed and that cost us quite some time of course, but for Volkswagen to win the SP3T-class and our Scirocco to finish third in the end, is a great outcome of a very special weekend."
Next weekend, on May 30 and 31, Carlo races on the German Lausitzring, where round three and four of the Formula 3 Euroseries will be staged.
