MINASSIAN AND GENE - KINGS OF THE FRONT ROW

Nicolas Minassian, who was entrusted with qualifying duties at Spa today claimed pole position with a time of 2m 0.105s, narrowly missing breaking the 2 minute lap mark. This was his second pole of the season, following that secured at Monza and the fourth for the N°7908 HDi FAP, including those posted by Nicolas Minassian's team-mate Marc Gene who was fastest at Valence and at the Nürburgring.

Nicolas Minassian left the pits right at the start of the session which allowed him to have a clear track for his four flying laps. He notched up his best time of 2m 0.105s during his first run. Then, after backing off for a lap, he tried to beat his first time, but could 'only' manage a 2m 0.373s and then a 2m 0.127s which spoke volumes for the consistency and speed of his Michelin tyres.

Driving the N°8 car, Stéphane Sarrazin went out later in the session and posted times very close to those of his team mate but his 2m 0.779s and 2m 0.557s were insufficient to topple Minassian from the top of the timesheets. "My car was suffering from understeer which affected me on all of my runs," he said.

Nicolas Minassian was delighted to have bagged yet another pole position: "The Peugeot Sport team worked well during the various free practice sessions and we made good, consistent progress in terms of the two cars' handling. I am really surprised by the effectiveness of the 908's chassis which feels really at home on circuits like Spa Francochamps."

Sunday will see Marc Gene and Pedro Lamy take the start of the 1,000km race at 12.30pm for 143 laps of the celebrated Belgian venue.
