ACCIDENT DAMAGE BRINGS PREMATURE END TO CREATION'S WEEKEND

In today's first hour-long practice session for Sunday's second round of the 2006 Le Mans Series, the blue Creation Autosportif CA06/H was involved in an accident which ended all hopes of further running in this weekend's event.

Felipe Ortiz was at the wheel for the last 15 minutes of the session, and describes what happened. "I was familiarising myself with the track again as I haven't been here since 2003. I'd done a couple of laps at speed. I came across Collini in the Lucchini LMP2 at Blanchimont and I was obviously quicker than him so decided to overtake when, probably I shouldn't have done. It was my own stupidity.

"I put my nose forward to overtake him but he didn't see me and closed the gap. When you lift off that suddenly, from over 230 kph, it's hard to keep it straight and I spun 3 or maybe 4 times and ended up facing the traffic. While I was stationary a Corvette (believed to be PSI C5 no.71) clipped me on the front left corner of the car and pushed the wishbone into the tub."

Team Director Ian Bickerton voiced the disappointment of the whole team in confirming that the car has been withdrawn from any further participation at Spa.

"It's all repairable but not quickly. It's probably a week-long job. Our plan is now to pack up, go home and rip into it. We'll repair it as quickly as possible and get out testing somewhere before the official Le Mans test on the 4th June."

Before the accident Nicolas Minassian and Beppe Gabbiani had both driven the car, with Minassian setting the second quickest overall time of the session at 2:09.652 behind the Pescarolo of Collard and Bouillion.
