Team Modena Fired Out of LMS Second Place

A strong finish in the fourth round of the 2009 Le Mans Series at the Nurburgring was denied Team Modena this Sunday, August 23rd, when with just over an hour of the 1000km race remaining Leo Mansell was hit from behind by another car and fired off the track from second place in the LM GT2 class, costing the team five laps. Despite only the rear wheels of the car being in a gravel trap, the circuit marshals did not push the car back on to the track but dragged it right away to the barriers, Leo having to unclip the tow rope himself at that point and bring the car, which only had a puncture, back to the pits. Up until that point the driver team of Antonio Garcia, Toni Vilander and Leo had kept the team's Ferrari 430 GT up at the front of the LM GT2 class battle, leading for sections of the race and with at least second place looking likely and the win still there to race for.

"It was a superb race for us, everything was going well," said Team Principal Graham Schultz, "the boys in the pit-lane were on form and the pit stops were great, but then we got hit in the back and it was all over, not a lot we could do or say after the delays with the circuit marshals in bringing the car back."
