Another LMES podium for Convers Team

The Convers Team finished on the podium for the second race of the 2005 Le Mans Endurance Series, Christophe Bouchut, Alexey Vasiliev and Nikolay Fomenko taking third in class at Monza.

Driving the Ferrari 550 Maranello beautifully, Bouchut took the lead at the start of the race and extended it through his first stint. He handed the car to Alexey Vasiliev who continued the good work, but then Nikolay Fomenko was caught out by a slower Porsche during his stint, and he lost two laps in the gravel trap.

"I was following the Porsche and he left the door open for me," said Fomenko. "I went to pass him, but then he suddenly shut the door and as I was on the accelerator, I did not have time to lift off and then brake. I went into the gravel and lost two laps there."

Bouchut and Vasiliev took over the driving duties until the end of the race, and were pleased to reach the podium. "We had a good start, and by the two hour mark we were leading easily," said Bouchut. "We did not have the luck today that we needed. I expected to win this race, but with this third position we are not too far away from the lead of the championship, and our target is still to win it."

Rob Schirle, owner of the Cirtek team which runs the Conversbank-backed Ferrari, was disappointed not to have repeated the team's fine second position at the opening round at Spa in April. "That was the easiest win we have ever thrown away," said Schirle.

The next race in the 2005 Le Mans Endurance Series is at Silverstone, England, on August 12/13.
