Unlucky start steals podium finish from QUIFEL-ASM

Team Hope rests on Monza

A drive off the track caused by a delayed competitor, drove the Quifel-ASM Team down in the placing, despite being in third place in the LMP2 class in the Catalonia 1,000 km race before the incident. The Portuguese team ended in ninth place in the first race of the Le Mans Series 2008 Championship, which was run today in Barcelona.

The incident damaged the suspension arms on the car. However, the problems in the Lola B05/40 AER were not noticed immediately. Only when Miguel Pais do Amaral left the track, after replacing Pla at the driving seat, was the problem detected.

The incident required a pit stop to repair the back left suspension arm and led to a 15-minute delay, which meant the team was pushed down in the placing. Hopes are now pinned on the race at Monza, which is scheduled for 27th April.

The Portuguese team's managers played down the situation due to the good pace shown in the race and the fact that the final result was due to unforeseen factors. The likelihood of incidents occurring has increased due to the large number of cars on the track, 48 in total in Barcelona, all racing at different speeds.
