In qualifying for the eighth round of the DTM at Zandvoort Opel had three Vectra GTS V8 in the super pole for the best ten. The fastest Opel driver was Manuel Reuter (OPC Team Holzer) in eighth place. Teammate Timo Schieder, the only Opel driver to have competed in all the super pole sessions of the season, was ninth and Marcel Fässler (OPC Team Phoenix) completed the Opel trio in the top ten.
Laurent Aiello (OPC Team Phoenix) and Jeroen Bleekemolen (OPC Euroteam) were unlucky due to accidents in the morning free practice which meant they missed the majority of qualifying due to the time needed for repairs.
Volker Strycek Opel motorsport chief:
"We placed three cars in the top ten but with the accidents in free training we lost all chance of fighting to get other cars into the super pole qualifying. I am not happy with starting rows four and five but we are getting better as the season progresses."
Manuel Reuter (OPC Team Holzer) 1:34.378, 8th
"Because in qualifying the track was never really free, I was looking forward to the super pole round but then the grip at the rear axle was less. I am happy, however, to be the best Opel driver."
Timo Scheider (OPC Team Holzer) 1:34.294, 9th
"Thank you to the crew, who improved the car from free training to qualifying again. I would not have counted on such a good time in qualifying. In the super pole round the grip was not as good as it was before."
Marcel Fässler (OPC Team Phoenix) 1:34.411, 10th
"In qualifying we improved on each run but on the individually timed lap there was a lot of dirt on the track and I slipped onto the grass once -- after that I couldn't expect more."
Heinz-Harald Frentzen (OPC Team Phoenix) 1:34.651, 12th
"I was heading for the top ten on my second run but then a year old car got in front of me on its slow lap and blocked me."
Jeroen Bleekemolen (OPC Euroteam) 1:35.071, 15th
"Huge thanks to my crew! They worked very hard so I could take part in qualifying. It was 7.40 minutes before the end when I got on track therefore the result is good."
Peter Dumbreck (OPC Team Phoenix) 1:35.232, 16th
"Firstly I drove a safe lap and in the second I attacked and went off the track. On the third lap I attacked again and was already six tenths faster but in the next to last curve I had to brake so hard that the wheels locked."
Laurent Aiello (OPC Team Phoenix) 1:37.563, 20th
"My team repaired the accident damage really fast and got me onto the track with just one and a half minutes remaining. Therefore I was only able to do one lap."
