The Mercedes runners were the ones to beat initially, with Paul Di Resta fastest in the early stages with a 1m25.360s before Mercedes F1 tester Pascal Wehrlein ousted the Scotsman from the top of the times with a 1m25.090s.

Di Resta had cemented his hold on second with a time just six thousandths slower than Wehrlein when red flags were shown, Miguel Molina’s Audi grinding to a halt in the middle of the track at Turn 3 with eight minutes left on the clock.

When the action resumed, Di Resta managed to get back on to provisional pole with a 1m25.075s, before Mortara lowered the benchmark by nearly four tenths moments later with a searing effort of 1m24.714s.

Green made a late jump to second with a time 0.193s slower, with Wehrlein moving back into third ahead of Di Resta and Augusto Farfus in the best of the BMWs.

Christian Vietoris was sixth quickest, ahead of fellow Mercedes runners Robert Wickens and Gary Paffett, with Audi duo Mattias Ekstrom and Mike Rockenfeller completing the top 10.
