Double DTM champion Bernd Schneider was happy with last season's results, despite losing his title to Laurent Aiello. The battle between the two went to the penultimate round at Zandvoort but Mercedes driver Schneider had to concede defeat. Despite losing out to Abt-Sportsline's Aiello, Schneider and team-mate Jean Alesi did claim the Team's championship for AMG Mercedes.

"Last season, we got the maximum out of it," Schneider told the official DTM website. "There was just not more that could be done, so I am satisfied with the result from last year, especially as we had an exciting season."

Mercedes has tested one of its new 2003 cars so far this year, at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona at the end of January. The car was finished later than expected but Mercedes wanted to put every effort into development. So far only a shakedown test has been run but Schneider thinks things are coming along: "I am very positive looking forward to the season," he commented. "Development with the new car is working all right."

Schneider only managed two race victories in 2002 and finished second to Aiello in the standings. So for his ambitions for this season, the German's goal is obvious: "That is relatively easy," he said of the result he wants. "I just have to do one place better than last year."
