Laurent Aiello claims pole-position at the Sachsenring
With a strong team performance, the Team Abt Sportsline is going into the fourth round of the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) at the Sachsenring. In the race on Sunday Laurent Aiello will be starting from the best grid position. The points leader only claimed the pole-position two minutes before the end of the qualifying session with a tiny margin of only 19 thousandths of a second. Strong performance: all five drivers of the team from Kempten in the Allgäu qualified in the top ten on the demanding up- and downhill-track near Chemnitz.
Quotes after qualifying
Laurent Aiello (1.19.411 min., 1st place):
"That was a nice battle with Alain Menu and Bernd Schneider. Throughout the session, track conditions were changing again and again and I was out on the track at the right moment. To be honest, I didn't even know that I was first when I came back into the pit box. I was all the more happy, as the television cameras came to me."
Martin Tomczyk (1.19.945 min., 6th place):
"I am satisfied with my position on the third grid row. For tomorrow, I planned not to take too many risks, just finish the race and score some points instead."
Karl Wendlinger (1.19.885 min., 5th place):
"I set my fastest time during my fourth attempt, which, however, wasn't perfect. I generally had different impressions of the car and of the track on each of my four runs. Now, we will try to find the best possible set-up for the race tomorrow. In any case, I have the possibilities to race among the front runners."
Christian Abt (1.19.988 min., 8th place):
"I improved on every run, but I never managed to put together three perfect sections into one single lap. Nevertheless, the fourth row is absolutely right for me. I have always been stronger on Sunday than on Saturday."
Mattias Ekström (1.20.072 min., 9th place):
"The first and the second section of the track were perfect, unfortunately I kept losing some time on the final section. Tomorrow, we will have one hour of racing, and we saw a fortnight ago in Donington what can happen in the race, when I finished third after having started from the pit lane. Compared to that, I am starting from pole-position tomorrow."
Hans-Jürgen Abt (team boss):
"Today, my five drivers have shown a fine team effort once again. Laurent has proven his exceptional quality once more: he showed his entire performance in the very minute as it counted. Laurent on pole, three makes on the first three positions, then the rest with the four rings on the cooler grille, packed grand stands and nice weather - I think, tomorrow we will see a real highlight of this DTM-season."
