Jean Alesi took his first DTM victory at Donington park on Sunday and was pleased to be racing in England which for him is something special. In Saturday qualifying a concerned looking Alesi watched the other driver's times in his pit garage after taking provisional pole position and said he was not surprised his time was bettered.

"Yes of course (I expected to be bettered), that is motor racing. I did my laps quite quick; there was 15 minutes left when I finished my laps so I had to watch on TV the other drivers and of course I was hoping not to be beaten. It happened, but I am pleased anyway to be on the front row and am very confident for tomorrow. (Sunday)"

Alesi was the only quick driver on slick tyres and although the conditions were difficult he managed to handle the car well. His confidence was not misplaced as he led the main race in fine style from start to finish to score his second podium of the season and his first visit to the top step. Always popular, the 12,000 strong crowd at Donington welcomed the French-Sicilian with delight.

"I had thirteen Grands Prix in England and I drove for English teams many times, starting with Ken Tyrrell," Alesi said. "So motor racing in England is something special and I have the luck to be followed by fans all over the world."
