At the start of a new week AMG Mercedes again took the two fastest spots on the testing sheets after being on top over the weekend. Bernd Schneider was quickest, clocking a 1.19.735 and Uwe Alzen posted a second fastest, just fractionally behind.
The Euroteam Opel of Alain Menu was third and he was pleased with progress as his car is still running Opel's older aerodynamic package. "We're making progress, I'm pretty happy," he said. "I think we're heading in the right direction, and you never know what games the opposition might be playing. I believe we can go quicker than what we've shown so far."
Opel have been struggling since the beginning of testing at Paul Ricard: Michael Bartels had a collision with the Mercedes of Stefan Mucke on Saturday afternoon, Menu had transmission problems on Sunday while Manuel Reuter only had two laps, also on Sunday, after his new 2002 car had a fuel leak.
Volker Strycek, Opel Motorsport boss, said he was happy with the results and hopes for more once all the cars are running the new aerodynamics: "I am quite happy with the test so far. It is good to see all the cars so close together, but it is only a test and the times are not that important. The cars performed well, although they are not running in the full 2002 aero spec. I hope there is more to come."
Mercedes rookie Stefan Mucke separated the three Opels with fourth fastest, Manuel Reuter and Timo Scheider being the other two Opel drivers on track, in fifth and sixth. The single Audi of the day was Christian Abt who rounded up the times in seventh with a 1.20.502.
