Laurent Aiello on front row of the grid after rain gamble

Qualifying for the seventh round of the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) was nothing for weak nerves: at the Nürburgring, the lead changed 15 times before the line-up of the front grid row was finally established. Laurent Aiello will be starting from second place into the race, alongside pole-sitter Uwe Alzen. Thus, the points leader will be starting directly in front of reigning champion Bernd Schneider.

In an exciting qualifying session, which turned out into a real rain gamble on a drying track, Christian Abt secured himself sixth place on the grid. Less fortunate were Karl Wendlinger and Martin Tomczyk, who didn't pick the right time for their attempts and will be starting from tenth and 17th place respectively. Mattias Ekström slid into the gravel trap on his best lap. With the time he set in the rain, he will start catching up from last on the grid.

Quotes after qualifying

Laurent Aiello (1.26.853 min., 2nd place):

"Today, circumstances were very difficult. It was possible to go out on slicks at an early stage already, although the track wasn't completely dry. Fortunately, we were very well prepared after the rainy practice session in the morning. I don't have the best experience with such weather conditions in a qualifying session, therefore I am happy with second place."

Christian Abt (1.27.473 min., 6th place):

"I think I was out a little bit too early, otherwise I could perhaps have been even quicker. But after such a crazy qualifying, sixth place is absolutely all right. The new part of the track is quite difficult: there is only one line which you have to get to be quick, unfortunately, that is not my ideal line."

Karl Wendlinger (1.27.923 min., 10th place):

"Today, my car would at least have been good for second row on the grid. But on my last lap, I came into the dirt a little and my good lap time was gone. Now, it will be difficult to get to the front in the race tomorrow, as overtaking isn't easy over here."

Martin Tomczyk (1.28.818 min., 17th place):

"Somehow, no qualifying session has been run under totally normal conditions this year, and today, it was very chaotic once again. I am certain that I could have made it into the top three. But I waited a little bit too long with my final attempt, and then drizzle set in again."

Mattias Ekström (1.32.761 min., 21st place):

"Towards the end of the session, I slid into the gravel trap and therefore couldn't improve my time anymore. But I have dealt with it. Tomorrow, I will make a great start and I can already promise the guys in front of me: they will have a lot of nice fights with a blue Abt-Audi TT-R with black head lights."

Hans-Jürgen Abt (team boss):

"The grid with Laurent and Bernd immediately behind each other promises an exciting race which the spectators can look forward to. Qualifying was exciting enough already -- I am glad that we survived the rain gamble this well."
