It’s the story of matters coming together, a successful outcome or quite simply that of a dream turning into reality. Not only will Maxime Martin be wearing the BMW Motorsport colours in 2014, but he will also be joining the elite of the Touring car drivers by competing in the prestigious and highly international DTM! “For me this is a major step forward, Maxime explained. It was the target I had set myself, the main aim of my racing career.

I came into the sport rather late, never dreamt about Formula 1 when driving a kart, just like others at the age of 10 years old. I have always considered the DTM to be a target to attain; the top slot of the Touring discipline. And now one year after my debut as an official BMW driver, I have made it! “

It is true that the DTM can be considered to be the F1 of the Touring cars. The cream of the competitions for saloon cars. “If one looks at the infrastructures, the teams, the investments granted by the manufacturers, one understands why this championship serves as reference, Martin continued. I’m under no illusions: the first season will first and foremost be one of apprenticeship, in a high level context.

Everything will be new for me: the discipline, the car, the other competitors. This year I drove the M3 DTM during a test session in the month of August, but in wet conditions, in addition to the two days in Jerez this week. That’s all. I will obviously do everything in my power to be up front, but if truth be told I don’t really know what to expect. But there’s a time and place for everything … “

At the end of this week Maxime has completed two full test days at the wheel of this M3 DTM, in fact one of the car’s of the RMG team. However in no way does this imply that the future of the Belgian driver lies with this team. “This is a decision that I have no say in whatsoever, Maxime insisted on specifying. This Friday BMW Motorsport confirmed the list of its DTM drivers for 2014, and I’m more than delighted to be a part of it, but the splitting up of these same drivers into the different teams will only be made known in the coming weeks. Normally before the end of the year … “

The confirmation of Maxime’s involvement in DTM should not prevent him from competing in various Grand Touring events in 2014. This eventual additional programme depends upon various factors, and once more, it’s BMW Motorsport who will decide on all fronts. In the meanwhile, as the end of year approaches, one thing is for sure, Maxime Martin is a happy man …
