Marcel Fassler has beaten out Peter Dumbreck to drive one of the new Mercedes CLKs in this season's DTM. Mercedes is fielding four new cars in 2002 and it was a decision between the two drivers as to who would get the fourth of the new models. Fassler was earlier tipped to be the one and speaking to motorsport.com he confirmed that he has the drive.

"I drove the car yesterday," Fassler said, "I'm happy that I have the new model. It's a good car and should help me this season."

So will the new CLK give him an advantage over those in the older model?

"I hope so, otherwise it won't be so good! It should give me an advantage, it feels good to drive so I'm hoping it will be competitive."

Fassler has recently been in Austria for fitness training with the Mercedes team --taking part in activities such as skiing, mountain walking with snow shoes and working in the gym -- in preparation for the upcoming DTM season which starts on April 21st at Hockenheim. Last season he drove for the Warsteiner team and although he is not 100 per cent certain, he thinks he will drive for them again this year.

In October 2001 Fassler tested with McLaren for Formula One and although he hopes to test for F1 again at some point, at the moment he wants to focus on DTM.

"I think it's best for me to concentrate on DTM just now." He explained. "I want to have a good season, to do well and I'm looking forward to it. Maybe later on I can test for Formula One again but DTM is most important at the moment."
