DTM Istanbul, Qualifying: Fourth Pole Position for Gary Paffett

The second row on the grid is also covered by the C-Class drivers: Bruno Spengler (Mercedes Second Hand Cars/1:47.280) was third fastest with a 2004 model, the same result he had achieved in the season's sixth race at the Norisring.

Jamie Green (Salzgitter AMG-Mercedes) ended up fourth with a 1:47.330. Mika Häkkinen was seventh with a 1:47.641, 13 thousandths of a second ahead of Jean Alesi (AMG-Mercedes) in eighth place. The Frenchman was half a second behind Paffett's pole position time.

11 minutes from the end of qualifying Spengler took the top spot on his second run and no other driver managed to improve his time of 1:47.208 during the session. For the first time a last year's car was first in qualifying.

Paffett was second fastest with a 1:47.337. Häkkinen (1:47.431) and Schneider (1:47.439) were fourth and fifth respectively, separated by eight thousandths of a second. Green qualified eighth fastest with a 1:47.564 and Alesi (1:47.769) was tenth and the sixth Mercedes-Benz driver to make it to the top-ten.

For the third time this year after Hockenheim and Norisring six C-Class drivers qualified for the single-lap qualifying. At the end of qualifying, the field of 20 cars was within less than 1.2sec.

Gary Paffett:

"The car was perfect and I had managed two very good laps in qualifying. In the single-lap qualifying, Bernd had put in a very good time, therefore I pushed throughout. Four cars in the top-four positions are an optimum basis for tomorrow's race. I thank the entire team for their great performance."

Bernd Schneider:

"Already in qualifying the car ran very well. We made some minor adjustments afterwards and then it was really perfect with very good grip. I'm satisfied to start from the front row again after my pole position at Zandvoort."

Bruno Spengler:

"I was very happy with the performance of my car after qualifying and in the single-lap qualifying, the balance was even better. However, I braked too late at the first sector into turn four and therefore lost a bit of time exiting the corner. Tomorrow I'll give it my all."

Jamie Green:

"First I had some problems today to get used to the different track conditions. But then we had our peak performance right in time, and I set my fastest lap of the weekend in the single-lap qualifying. With a good start tomorrow I should be able to end up on the podium."

Mika Häkkinen:

"I made a little mistake at the first corner and had to back off briefly. I wasn't able to regain the time I lost there. My basis for the race is not ideal, but I'm very happy for the entire team and for Gary's pole position."

Jean Alesi:

"It's good to be among the top-ten again. Unfortunately I made a mistake which cost me some positions; however I'm glad about our great team performance. Tomorrow I finally want to achieve a good result."

Alexandros Margaritis:

"We started the weekend well yesterday; however, we didn't manage to improve today. I had particularly problems with the balance under braking. Nevertheless I hope for a better result tomorrow as the gaps within the field are pretty small."

Stefan Mücke:

"I'm not satisfied with 19th place. After track conditions had changed since Friday, we were not able to adjust the car in time."

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

"To have four cars on the first two rows of the grid is very rare. A good job by Gary, Bernd, Bruno and Jamie. The whole team under Gerhard Ungar and Hans-Jürgen Mattheis worked very well achieving our seventh pole position of the year. Tomorrow Gary will give it his all to regain the championship lead prior to the final race."

"Bruno Spengler's performance being fastest in qualifying with a 2004 C-Class and the first driver to achieve this with a last year's car at all is impressive. It shows that the concept of the DTM works and makes us confident for the future of the championship."
