Bernd Schneider in his Mercedes-Benz CLK-DTM on Pole Position Marcel Fässler third and Jean Alesi fifth in the new single lap qualifying
Bernd Schneider (Vodafone AMG-Mercedes) will start Sunday’s first round of the 2003 DTM at Hockenheim from pole position. In the first single-lap qualifying of the new DTM, Bernd set a time of 1:35.141 and achieved his 19th DTM pole position. Behind Martin Tomczyk (Abt-Audi TT-R/1:35.285), Marcel Fässler (AMG-Mercedes) was third fastest with 1:35.474 whilst Jean Alesi qualified fifth fastest with a 1:35.627.
Qualifying started with a 20-minute session, in which the drivers were allowed nine laps with a maximum of three sets of tyres. After all drivers had finished their first run, there was slight drizzle and it was only at the end of the session, that the track was dry enough for better lap times. The ten fastest drivers of this session took part in the new Super Pole single-lap qualifying.
Bernd Schneider, Vodafone AMG-Mercedes, pole position (1:35.141):
"A faultless lap like this one is something really rare. The time I posted in the single-lap qualifying is the fastest I have ever achieved at this circuit. A great start to the season for my team and me."
Marcel Fässler, AMG-Mercedes, third (1:35.474):
"I made no mistake during the singe-lap qualifying, but I was a bit too careful. It was mainly due to the third sector in the Motodrom that I was slower than Bernd. He was faster today - congratulations."
Jean Alesi, AMG-Mercedes, AMG-Mercedes, fifth (1:35.627):
"A good start to the new season. Yesterday and today my car was perfect, but during the Super Pole I made a slight mistake at turn 1, which cost me some tenths of a second. Therefore I continued more carefully and qualified fifth fastest - from this position everything is possible.”
Christijan Albers, ExpressService AMG-Mercedes, 13th (1:36.705):
"On my first flying lap, I was too careful, on my second attempt it already began to rain and then I went out for my final run too early when it was still wet in the last sector."
Patrick Huisman, Service 24h AMG-Mercedes, 14th (1:37.051):
"Considering the fact that I didn't test before this weekend, I'm really happy with my result. It's fun to be behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-DTM again and the team did a great job."
Stefan Mücke, Service 24 h AMG-Mercedes, 17th (1:37.256):
"In the beginning everybody went out, because they thought it would rain, but in the traffic my brakes didn't get warm enough for a fast lap. Later on it was too wet for a good time."
Bernd Mayländer, Original-Teile AMG-Mercedes, 18th (1:37.651):
"On my fastest lap I made a mistake in the last sector and therefore couldn't do faster than this. The car is better than 18th place, therefore I'm optimistic for Sunday's race."
Thomas Jäger, Original-Teile AMG-Mercedes, 19th (1:37.754):
"The car ran well, but I was not aggressive enough when the track conditions were still good."
Katsutomo Kaneishi, ARTA AMG-Mercedes, 21st (1:38.266):
"I'm happy about my car, but not about my result. With my second set of tyres I did well in the first and second sectors, but in the third part there was more rain.”
Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:
"A great performance of Bernd and his team of technicians and mechanics. He drove an impressive lap. The new qualifying format has proved to be good and the competitiveness is remarkable. With the positions one, three and five on the grid we have a good basis for Sunday's race. Already today we experienced a fantastic atmosphere, all spectators have enjoyed the exciting competition."
