Gary Paffett rings in DTM final with top time

The second training session before the final race weekend of the 2004 DTM season was charged with action. The drying track triggered ever better lap times - and constantly changing leaders from all the car makes.

The two Mercedes drivers, Gary Paffett (1:35.201 minutes) and Christijan Albers, ultimately ended ahead just like in the morning session. The gap was a mere 35 thousandth's of a second.

The new DTM champion Mattias Ekström (Audi) placed third. Paffett and Albers are battling it out in the 10th and final race of the season on Sunday for the runner-up title in the overall standings, while Tom Kristensen can still clinch third place in his Audi A4 DTM.

Opel also pulled off a successful start to the weekend: Marcel Fässler, Timo Scheider, Peter Dumbreck and Manuel Reuter drove their Opel Vectra GTS V8s into the top 10.

Gary Paffett (C-class AMG-Mercedes):

"The second test was very interesting up until the very end. The outside conditions weren't ideal, but I think we've formed a good foundation for tomorrow."

Mattias Ekström (Audi Sport Team Abt):

"The second test went very well although the track conditions were very changeable. It was the most exciting Friday training session of the season as the top times kept changing. I've noticed that Mercedes is not unbeatable here."

Marcel Fässler (OPC Team Phoenix):

"We had to wait quite a while until the track had dried off sufficiently well. Actually, in the end only the ideal line was dry enough. We tried to find the right balance. I'll be happy if it's dry tomorrow."
