In the second DTM qualifying of the season Opel secured a strong starting positing for the race.

Timo Scheider (OPC Team Holzer) secured the third best time in the individual timed laps. New signing Heinz-Harald Frentzen (OPC Team Holzer) was also convincing: the former Formula One driver qualified with the eight best time, for a fourth row start.

Peter Dumbreck (OPC Team Phoenix) and Manuel Reuter (OPC Team Holzer) only just missed the super-pole qualifying. The Scot was in the top ten shortly before the end of the first qualifying session, but was 0.043 seconds outside at the finish.

Volker Strycek Opel motorsport boss:

"Timo and Heinz-Harald were convincing today in an exciting qualifying session. The Vectra GTS V8 is competitive. Looking at the times it shows that each small mistake, even if it costs only a tenth, decides who takes part in the super-pole qualifying and who does not."

Timo Scheider (OPC Team Holzer) 1:34.512, 3rd

"My second lap of my three runs in first qualifying was my best. A change at the rear axle before the super-pole paid off. The car was great, as the time shows."

Heinz-Harald Frentzen (OPC Team Holzer) 1:34.837, 8th

"Today I understood how to deal with the tyres better. Compared with Hockenheim it's a 100% personal improvement. The super-pole round went well too."

Peter Dumbreck (OPC Team Phoenix) 1:34.981, 11th

"In my second run I had more traffic. Then when I applied the brakes gently a wheel locked and I had to abort the fast lap."

Manuel Reuter (OPC Team Holzer) 1:35.018, 12th

"I am pissed off. Already in Hockenheim a year-old car ruined my race and now here in qualifying. It's completely unnecessary on the straight."

Marcel Fässler (OPC Team Phoenix) 1:35.038, 13th

"Unfortunately when I exited the pit lane the drive shaft broke. At the end there was only enough time for two fast laps. The first was not so great, the second was better but there was a car in the way."

Laurent Aiello (OPC Team Phoenix) 1:35.289, 14th

"I drove with three different types of tyres. Unfortunately none of the tyres developed any grip but the balance of the car is okay."

Jeroen Bleekemolen (OPC Euroteam) 1:36.017, 18th

"My three laps went without any particular problems but I had expected the results to be about two tenths faster. We still need to improve somewhat for the race."
