In motorsport, the "DMSB-Staffel"[*] is regarded as the world's best mobile safety unit. It had its first official assignment during the "Jim Clark Gedächtnisrennen"[**] at the Hockenheimring on April 7 and 8, 1973, and now celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Based on an idea of its drivers' delegate, Herbert Linge, one of the DMSB's preceding organisations, the ONS (Oberste Nationale Sportkommision für den Automobilsport in Deutschland) established an efficient safety crew with its "ONS-Staffel". Herbert Linge was in control, he was later awarded the German Bundesverdienstkreuz[***] for his efforts for safety in motorsport.
The current "DMSB-Staffel" is based on the idealism and the involvement of meanwhile some 150 volunteers who are looking after the safety of the drivers at over 100 motorsport events each year and help quickly in case of an emergency.
"When we revived the DTM three years ago, for us, the safety aspect was on pole-position in the construction of the cars, so to say", explains Hans Werner Aufrecht, chairman of the ITR. "But passive safety of a race car is only half the job. Without the "DMSB-Staffel" and its helpers, the concept wouldn't be effective. I have great respect for the professionalism, with which the "DMSB-Staffel" is being led and with which it is working. Thus, it has acquired an excellent reputation at worldwide level."
Because of its effective efforts, not only in Germany and 14 other European countries, but also in Japan and South-Africa, the "DMSB-Staffel" has long become an established institution in international motorsport and the concept has been copied all over the world. DMSB's secretary-general Dr. Michael Engel: "Safety in motorsport is one of the most important and elementary aspects of the DMSB. The "DMSB-Staffel" is a symbol for which many other governing bodies around the world are envying us."
Then as now, the crew is being generously supported by numerous companies from the automotive and supplying industries, such as Audi, BMW, Fiat, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche, VW and Dunlop. However, over the years, the demands on this safety element have become so big, that the DMSB has to finance the crew largely from its own means.
