Incredibly close competition during DTM-test in Italy

In tropical conditions, the test day before the second round of the DTM at the Adria International Raceway in Italy once again showed how incredibly close the competition in the series is. In the second of two 90 minutes' test sessions, the first 16 drivers were separated by a mere eight tenths of a second.

Mercedes-Benz-driver Christijan Albers (NL) set the fastest time of the day with 1.18.812 minutes in the afternoon session. Four Mercedes-drivers occupied the first four places, and were separated by only 0.08 seconds. The close competition promises a highly exciting race on Sunday.

Peter Dumbreck, who already was fastest Opel-driver in the season opener at Hockenheim, was fifth in the afternoon with his Astra V8 Coupé. "After today's test, it is clear, that it will be extremely hard on Sunday. You have to take care of the car, the tyres, but also your own power," the Scotsman said. Bernd Schneider, who had been fastest in the morning, judged: "It is really hard for man and machine."

Mattias Ekström drove for the first time at the 2.702 kilometres long track near Venice. The Swede was fastest driver of the Abt-Audi-team in sixth place. He commented: "The track is really fun and it suits me. I know such tracks very well from back home, but so far, rather from karting."

Frenchman Jean Alesi, who was fourth in the afternoon with his Mercedes-Benz CLK-DTM, turned out to be impressed: "I really like this track. Moreover, I am happy to be racing in Italy again. The many banners from the fans along the track proved to be a great motivation today already."
