Abt-Audi boss Hans-J?rgen Abt is in favour of scrapping the current two race DTM format for one longer race. The pre-main event qualifying race is usually seven to nine laps, depending on circuit distance and there has been discussion on the subject of getting rid of it. Abt thinks some people don't understand the two-race format and television companies are more interested in a one race event.
Some would be disappointed to see the end of the qualifying race though, as it gives DTM weekends a unique character rather than the standard one race format that everyone is familiar with.
Currently the DTM cars do not need to refuel during the main race but altering the format to a single, longer distance would make this necessary. Abt doesn't believe refueling would make an added risk: "We will work hard to ensure that everything is done in a professional and safe manner," he said.
So far Abt has confirmed its 2002 champion Laurent Aiello, Christian Abt, Mattias Ekstr?m, Martin Tomczyk and Karl Wendlinger for 2003 but have yet to announce the sixth driver to complete the squad.
