Wally Stroupe’s Tough As Nails, IHRA Holley Spring Nationals Performance Confirms It!
ROCKINGHAM, NC-- You just have to admire this Wally Stroupe fella. After having an emergency appendectomy, and still in apparent pain, made an attempt to race at the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals presented by Castrol. The Kings Mountain, N.C.,-based chassis builder rewrote all standards of pain management.
A week before the event, Stroupe was rushed to the hospital where he had his appendix removed. He returned a few days later with an ensuing infection. Stroupe made plans to sit out the event. However, you can’t keep a good man down.
The same racer who rebounded from second and third degree burns to finish as a finalist four races later, produced a 6.515/215.36, good enough for the early second spot. Friday’s second session afforded him a better run, but a lower qualifying position. He carded a 6.48/214.89 and dropped to fifth.
Stroupe opted to forgo the third session because of illness and his decision dropped him to 12th position. During the final session of qualifying, Stroupe produced an inspirational performance. The entry before him applied a massive oildown to the track and Stroupe had to sit in the Carolina heat as the PTS crew groomed the racing surface back to status. He rebounded an ran his quickest and fastest of the day with a 6.464/217.07, catapulting him into the sixth spot. The fairytale weekend came to an abrupt halt as Stroupe ran into a supercharged buzzsaw wielded by Fred Hahn. In the First round of eliminations, Stroupe was off the pace with a 6.677/212.91, and Hahn took advantage with a 6.372/218.23. Wally Stroupe’s Trim Parts-sponsored team will continue their championship conquest at the rescheduled IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C., on May 8. Stroupe, along with each Pro Modified contestant will be afforded a time trial run during the course of the day and will begin final eliminations later in the afternoon. The event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
