LOUISVILLE, KY. - If Von Smith feels like shedding a tear when he walks up to the podium during the Snap-on Tools IHRA Awards Banquet this Saturday evening, it's okay. The veteran Pro Funny Car racer from Oak Ridge, TN., has earned it. In one season, this three-time World Champion captured seven national event wins out of a possible eleven. He still reached the finals nine times.

It may have looked easy with the level of dominance that he enjoyed, but behind the scenes it was a very trying for the champion.

"We started the season and we had so much to look forward to," explained Smith. "We encountered some problems during the course of the season with sponsorship, but we did not let that deter us."

Continued Smith, "Howard Moon and the guys kept tuning the car to perfection and I tried my best to be the toughest driver in the division. It seems like when adversity rears its ugly head is when this team pulls closer together and does what it has to with no regard to personal gain. It's a team effort and that was the glue that kept us together the whole time."

In the last two seasons, Smith has amassed incredibly thirteen wins. That level of performance remains unparalleled in the class.

Last year it was reported that Top Fuel was on the docket for 2000. As it stands now, Smith will return behind the wheel of his Atomic City Tool-backed, Pontiac Funny Car to defend his title.

The team is actively seeking a backer for the 2000 season and beyond.
