Von Smith Named IHRA Professional Driver Of The Year
LOUISVILLE, KY - Pro Funny Car champion Von Smith may have shed his trademark tear or two during his acceptance speech at the IHRA Snap-on Tools Awards Banquet, but they paled in comparison to the ones that fell when he was called to the podium for a second time to claim IHRA Professional Driver Of The Year accolades. The kind-hearted, yet tough as nails driver could hardly maintain his composure as emcee Bill Bader called him to the stage.
The win shocked Smith, who captured seven national event wins in 1999. This was a record that was only bettered in the professional ranks by Pro Stock veteran Bob Glidden.
"This stands as the greatest honor I could ever receive, next to being the dad of two great children," Smith uttered in a post-banquet interview. "I continue to get the accolades, but they really belong to Howard Moon and Wes, Chuck and David. My dad and mom are equally deserving of credit because they have always supported my efforts. This has to be one of the greatest nights of my life."
Smith had no equal in the Pro Funny Car division in 1999. He won two IHRA national events in Rockingham, NC., and added singular victories at Leicester, NY., Stanton, MI., Epping, NH., Budd's Creek, MD., and Shreveport, La.
Recently, Smith announced a marketing partnership with NitroFish with additional programs with Jensen Car Audio and his family-owned company Atomic City Tool.
Smith will make his 2000 season debut at the NHRA Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series Division 2 event in Gainesville, Fla., during the weekend of February 18-20.
