SPARTANBURG, SC - We all know him as the energetic Director of Staging at IHRA events, Steve LeTempt. However, when the official IHRA pre-season test event, the CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open at Virginia Motorsports Park March 8 -11, the veteran CARQUEST store-owner in Sumter, SC., will assume another role. He'll serve as the lead announcer at the eagerly awaited East Coast test and tune session.
LeTempt, a former drag racer who is known for his flashing apparel at the burnout box, will be waving his hands in the tower. His excitement will be conveyed to all of those that attend. March cannot come soon enough for LeTempt.
LeTempt exclaimed, "All I can say is Ohhhhhhhhh Baby! When Bobby asked me if I would announce for the CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open, I was ecstatic. This provides us with a wonderful chance to let the people in Virginia know how excited the IHRA is about coming there. Also, to have the chance to work with the great people at Competition Plus Dot Com as well as the super crew at Virginia Motorsports. Wow, I am excited!"
He continued, "So tighten your seat belt and get ready to get slammed back in the bucket. Yep, I'll be wearing the trademark red blazer, white pants with the red stripe and flaming tie, I'm going to BE THERE, BE THERE, BE THERE and so should YOU!"
Of all the entries received, the Pro Modified division has attracted the most pre-entries. Last season, when CompetitionPlus.com sponsored the Groundhog Warm-up in Darlington, SC, Harold Martin emerged as the big winner.
The pre-entries are starting to flow in for the event, which will be hosted by Virginia Motorsports Park in Dinwiddie, Va., and sponsored by Drag Racing's largest electronic Internet-based magazine CompetitionPlus.com. Pre-entry for the event is encouraged. For more information on this procedure, please refer to http://www.ihra.com/news/2000december/14spring_open.html for all questions and the proper format in which to pre-enter.
This unique event will feature everything from fire-spewing Top Fuel dragsters to the high-speed Pro Modifieds to various sportsman entries in test mode. There will be a special Chicago style eliminations program on Saturday in the professional divisions in exchange for the test time.
Sportsman racers can either test on a daily basis or can attain a special event package depending on what best suits their schedule.
This major testing event will fill the weekend formerly reserved for the Winter Nationals in Darlington, SC. It will provide the staff at Virginia Motorsports Park with an opportunity to meet and greet its new IHRA family. In late-June of 2000, VMP announced the switch of sanctions and will host its first IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series event in April 20 - 22, 2001.
Virginia Motorsports Park is a state of the art facility built in 1994 encompassing 700 acres. The drag strip is concrete the first 675 feet of the mile long track. VMP is located 25 minutes south of Richmond off of I-85.
