4/29/2003 Bristol, TN The best of the best...the top 14 racers from the AHDRA season opener were sent to the NHRA for an exhibition run...but should it really be called an exhibition run when you have nitro-burning Harleys going over 200mph? For the 14 pros, this exhibition run turned into a race for the #1 spot.

For the Vance & Hines / Drag Specialties team, it certainly started out as a race. In the first round of qualifying, Doug ran a 6.632 et, which put him in the middle of the pack. It was a clean run, but Doug definitely wanted get up in the ranks. The second round of qualifying was an improvement, with Doug moving up a notch with a 6.582 et. Third round, the team stepped up to #1 in qualifying with a 6.468 et and 209.52 mph, but the following pass, Ray Price ran a 6.447 et to take the helm. But this wasn't going to set Doug back. In the fourth and final round of qualifying, Doug finished back in the #1 spot with the quickest pass of the weekend, 6.379 et / 217.07 mph. "Ray's a great competitor and he's always out there pushing me to go quicker and faster" stated Doug.

Once the elimination rounds started on Sunday, the crowd was standing and cheering for the 200 mph riders at every pass. Doug started out against Mark Conner and was able to advance with another strong run of 6.482 et / 214.62 mph. The second round of eliminations, Vancil faced Takeshi Shigematsu and had to muscle the bike all the way down the track to keep it straight, but won decisively with a 6.456 et / 222.58 mph.

In the finals, Doug faced Mark Cox, who had been running great all weekend as well. Mark had set personal bests for himself and his team all weekend and was on a roll reaching the finals against Doug. Cox cut a great light, but had mechanical issues and Doug went on to win the race with a 6.70 et / 209.95.

Doug and the Vance & Hines / Drag Specialties team will be racing again this weekend May 3-4 at the AHDRA Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts Las Vegas Spring Nationals.
