VICK EARNS RUNNER-UP FINISH AT IHRA NORTH AMERICAN NATIONALS
EPPING, NH (Sept. 12, 1999) -- Steve Vick came up one round short of his second career national event Sunday at the Parts Pro North American Nationals at New England Dragway near Epping, NH.
Vick, of Mocksville, NC, qualified his 1968 Camaro 13th with a 6.470/218.97, then proceeded to get quicker throughout final eliminations. In round one he upset Fred Hahn, then move on to a round two meeting with John Bartunek. Vick turned on the win light against Bartunek with a 6.446/220.19.
In the semifinals, Vick sent home #1 qualifier Troy Crichley, driving Johnny Rocca's Iron Horse. Vick used a holeshot to get the win with his quickest run of the weekend, a 6.410.220.26. In the final, Vick lined up against the supercharged entry of Canadian Al Billes.
Vick got the jump away from the starting line, .447 to .471, then he suffered tire-shake and Billes took the win, 6.465/219.79 to 11.187/76.13.
"We tried to repeat the semifinal run, but we just overpowered the track," commented Vick, who earned his first career national event earlier this season at the CARQUEST Northern Nationals. "We had a winning car today though and we'll take our winning performance down to Rockingham and hopefully go one round further."
The next IHRA Snap-on Drag Racing National Event for Vick will be Sept. 24-26th, the IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals presented by Prolong at Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, N.C.
The Parts Pro North American Nationals will be televised on ESPN2, Friday, Oct. 1st at 1 p.m. (ET). The one hour show will be replayed, Tuesday, Oct. 12th at 4 a.m
