CENTER MORICHES, NY. - John Montecalvo has taken a step closer to becoming the most dominating driver in the IHRA Pro Stock division. The pilot of the Citgo-sponsored, Chevrolet Monte Carlo hired Steve Cultrera to turn the wrenches on his ultra quick machine.

Montecalvo, who immediately hired Cultrera after his release from the Charlie Hunt team, feels that he's attained one of the hardest working individuals in the industry.

"Steve is a hard worker," explained Montecalvo. "He's one of those guys that doesn't do much talking, but chooses to let his work do the talking. I'm really excited to work with him for many years to come. He's already worked with us for one test session and his work ethic impresses the heck out of me."

During that test session, Cultrera assisted former crewchief Billy Wagner in propelling Montecalvo's Sonny Leonard-powered machine into the 6.5-second zone in December of 1999. It marked the first time that any Pro Stocker had dipped into this timing frame.

Cultrera, who held the same position on the record setting race car driven by Tommy Lee, says that he's real excited about the new venture.

"This is going to be a great challenge for me," explained the former NHRA Comp eliminator standout. "John is a great guy and I hope to keep him in the forefront of the class. We'll do well because I know John is as committed to winning as I am."

Cultrera assisted by his wife JoAnne, who is extremely proficient in assisting her husband in all phases of the operation. She will serve as the team manager.
