Wally Stroupe Forced To Lift From Certain First Round Victory
STANTON, MI.-- Sometimes 1,320 feet of race track can be your best friend or worst enemy. For Pro Modified racer Wally Stroupe, who pilots the Trim Parts- sponsored, Pro Modified 1963 Corvette, it was the latter. The Kings Mountain, N.C.,-based, chassis builder was forced to relinquish a lead and a certain victory in the first round at the IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals in Stanton, Mi., when his ride got out of the groove and made an abrupt left turn. He wisely shut-off to race on another day.
In qualifying, Stroupe got off to a better start than he did at the last event in New York. He produced a 6.626/213.20 during the first session to settle into the ninth spot. The second attempt offered no improvement. He stepped up on Saturday during the third session and carded a 6.562/212.96, good enough for the sixth spot. He bettered his cause in the final session with a 6.538/213.91 and claimed the eighth spot and was paired against Harold Martin in the opening round.
Stroupe was quicker off of the line by .025 and was progressively thundering to victory. The car got out of shape and he was forced to abort the run. Martin went on victory with a 6.573/
Wally Stroupe's Trim Parts-sponsored team will continue their championship conquest at the IHRA MOPAR PARTS World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio., August 26 - 29. Stroupe, along with each Pro Modified contestant will be afforded a qualifying run on Thursday and Friday with another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday. The event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA.
