Team Castellana's Awesome Start Comes To Abrupt End
STANTON, Mich.-Team Castellana started off with an "Awesome" weekend at the 20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals, but the problem was that it didn't last as long as Mike Castellana and Shannon Jenkins expected.
After the pair made sizzling qualifying passes in the Pro Modified division on Friday, the weekend started slipping away, ending abruptly after Castellana and Jenkins lost in the first round of sixth stop on the IHRA tour.
A bright spot for the supermarket-chain owner from Westbury, N.Y., was that he made it into the Sunday elimination rounds after failing to do so in the last race two weeks ago in Leicester, N.Y.
In yesterday's head-to-head challenge against Quain Stott, the Long Islander had trouble getting off the starting line. His reaction time of .745 seconds to his opponents .495 gave Stott a virtually free ride down the Mid-Michigan Motorplex quarter-mile. Castellana had to settled for an elapsed time of 9.673 seconds at 86.42 mph to Stott's 6.325/221.78.
Despite a better elapsed time, Jenkins effort against Carl Moyer was in vain as the Alabaman lost his bid for a second straight pro-mod tour victory at the Christmas tree, .466 to .416. Jenkins completed the run in 6.351/221.60 to 6.376/219.33. He lost by a scant .025 seconds or about eight feet.
The Awesome 57 team had reason to smile after Friday's trials. Castellana roared to a 6.347/219.51 in his Western Beef-sponsor '57 Chevrolet, and he was the sixth quickest of the session. Jenkins was "more Awesome" with his pass of 6.282/223.14. The 6.28 eradicated the track record of 6.34 held by Stott and also put Jenkins on the pole.
Neither driver could some close during Saturday's sessions, but their runs from Friday were good enough to make the show. Jenkins entered eliminations as the second quickest, while Castellana placed a solid 10th.
The duo will have a month off to make refinements to the cars before returning to the tour in Norwalk, Ohio, for the Mopar Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol from Aug. 23-26.
