Herbert wins CARQUEST Northern Nationals, 11 finals postponed by rain
STANTON, Mich. -- A late evening rain shower forced a postponement of final rounds in 11 different categories Sunday at the 16th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals presented by Dart Heads at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex. The race had already been postponed for two hours earlier in the day due to persistent rain showers. The race is the fifth of eight IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series events. Champions were crowned in two categories, as Doug Herbert claimed the Top Fuel win and Larry Plummer was a winner in the API/Spitzer Quick 8 Top Dragster division. Those two final rounds took place just prior to the evening cloudburst. Defending IHRA Top Fuel World Champion Herbert cruised to a victory when top qualifier Paul Romine left the starting line early. Romine drove his CARQUEST Auto Parts-sponsored dragster to a 4.80 second, 291.07 mile per hour pass, but his effort was for naught when a red-light at the starting line gave Herbert the automatic win. Herbert, driving the Snap-on Tools dragster, covered the quarter-mile in 4.94, 296.44. Herbert, who set a new IHRA speed world record in Top Fuel at 303.43 mph during the weekend, advanced to the final round with wins over Jim Bailey and Wayne Bailey. With the win and speed record combined, Herbert made a major move in the championship point standings. "It seemed like everybody had forgot about me in the last few races," the Cherryville, N.C. resident said. "All I've been reading about lately is Shirley (Muldowney) and Paul. This puts us right back in the deal. We ran good this weekend and set the record, so it wasn't a complete gimme." Richie Stevens and Floyd Cheek will decide the Pro Stock title, Von Smith and Mark Thomas will battle for the Alcohol Funny Car crown and Shannon Jenkins and Quain Stott will compete for Pro Modified honors. The event will be completed Monday at 9 a.m.
