STANTON, MI (August 19, 2000) -- In his fourth final round of the season, Paul Romine guided the CARQUEST Auto Parts Top Fuel dragster to its second win of the year, defeating rookie sensation J.R. Todd at the rain-delayed CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, Michigan. The final round appearance was Romine's third consecutive at an IHRA drag racing event.
Romine began his race day on Saturday hurting an engine in a pre-race run prior to the first round of eliminations. The Clayton Harris-led CARQUEST team thrashed and went to the line with a new bullet against first round opponent Louie Allison. In the opening round, Romine gained a holeshot at the start, then won with an early shutoff 5.025/236.22 to Allison's 6.209/153.11.
In the semi-finals, Romine met rival Bruce Litton in the battle of filters, CARQUEST Premium Filters vs. Wix Filters. Romine had met Litton in the previous two IHRA final rounds with Litton winning in those two confrontations. He defeated Litton in the final round at the season opening Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals. Seeking revenge against his fellow Indianapolis resident for the previous two final round loses, Romine gained the starting line advantage, .478 to .486, then stormed to the Mid-Michigan's Motorplex's finish line, stopping the clocks with a winning 4.751/308.53 to Litton's 4.866/277.86.
Romine wasn't done with Litton though. Despite the Wix team's semi-final defeat, Romine faced rookie J.R. Todd in the final, driving a Bruce Litton team car.
With the time just past 11 p.m. Eastern and the air temperature a cool 58 degrees with the race track in prime condition, Romine staged his Clayton Harris-tuned 6,000 horsepower CARQUEST Auto Parts / Duragloss / Prolong Super Lubricants / CARQUEST Premium Filters / CARQUEST Brakes Top Fuel dragster against Todd. At the flash of green, Romine cut a .475 light to Todd's .495. Immediately at the hit of the throttle, Todd's machine went up in smoke. Romine meanwhile rocketed down the quarter-mile with 8 foot high header flames and in 4.776-seconds at 307.06 miles-per-hour, gained his 8th career IHRA National Event win and moved closer to a season ending $200,000 payday for the IHRA Top Fuel World Champions.
The CARQUEST team's victory celebration will be short lived however as the team's next race is the premiere IHRA event, the World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, which kicks off this Wednesday with Top Fuel qualifying.
