ROMINE READY FOR THE CARQUEST NORTHERN NATIONALS

STANTON, MI. (July 21, 1999) - Amidst the farmlands of central Michigan, there is a quarter-mile drag strip that ranks as one of the best the nation has to offer and it is the Mid-Michigan Motorplex near Stanton, Mich. Since it began hosting the IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals two years ago, records have fallen in each of the first two events. Paul Romine and his CARQUEST Top Fuel team hope to again open the records books July 31st and August 1st at the CARQUEST Northern Nationals presented by Prolong Super Lubricants.

At the 1997 CARQUEST Northern Nationals, Romine recorded then the quickest elapsed time in IHRA history, 4.800-seconds. He did not back it up for a new IHRA record. Last season at the CARQUEST Northern Nationals, Romine did set an IHRA e.t. record at 4.76-second in round one, only to see it reset in the final round by Pat Dakin.

"The CARQUEST Northern Nationals has always been one of my favorite IHRA races because the Mid-Michigan Motorplex is such a quality facility," commented Romine. "The Ledfords do a great job in preparing the track and it can usually handle the power we put to it."

The Mid-Michigan Motorplex is not only special to Romine because it is quick, but it is also the place he introduced his CARQUEST sponsorship two years ago.

"Originally we were only going to be sponsored by CARQUEST at Stanton," Romine said. "But we really hit it off with all the CARQUEST folks in Michigan and I think it was our success in '97 at Stanton that led to what we have today with CARQUEST."

Top Fuel qualifying for the CARQUEST Northern Nationals presented by Prolong Super Lubricants is set for Saturday, July 31st with sessions at 12 noon and 7 p.m. (EDT). Final eliminations are scheduled to begin Sunday, August 1st at 12 noon.

Race fans will be greeted by improvements to the Mid-Michigan Motorplex. An additional 3,000 new aluminum grandstand seats have been added to the pit side. Fans will also be treated to new state of the art 48-foot Daktronics scoreboards, which replace the old 24-foot boards. The Motorplex has also added a new FM radio to broadcast public address announcements, making it possible to follow the racing up to three miles away. The track surface has also been filled and smoothed to provide close, side-by-side racing.

Tickets for Saturday and Sunday tickets are just $30 and include a free pit pass. Children 6-12 are only $5 each day and a three-day "Superpass" is available for $60.

ESPN2 will televise a 60-minute highlight show of the CARQUEST Northern Nationals presented by Prolong Super Lubricants, Sunday, Sept. 19th at 10 a.m. and again Thursday, Sept. 23rd at 1 p.m.

Prior to the CARQUEST Northern Nationals, Romine and the CARQUEST Top Fuel show car will be at the CARQUEST Auto Parts Store in Owosso, Mich., Thursday, July 29th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The store is located at 1201 East Main Street in Owosso. For more information, call 517-729-6365
