Brinsfield Comes Within Striking Distance Again, Finishes Semi-Finalist

STANTON, MI-- Dale Brinsfield is so close to winning an IHRA national event that he can just taste it. However, the veteran Pro Modified racer from Greensboro, N.C., will have to come back on another day to fulfill his appetite. The Dylan Mortgage-sponsored, pilot finished as a semi-finalist at the IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals, dropping a tough one to Steve Vick.

Brinsfield opened his event in Michigan with the same attitude that he displayed at New York. He stormed down the Mid-Michigan Motorplex racing surface for a great baseline 6.592/211.99. This run put him in the sixth spot at the end of the session. Although he failed to improve, a 6.62 in the second session wasn’t a bad lap by any means.

Brinsfield took advantage of cooler conditions on Saturday to step up to a 6.577/207.46 to secure the 10th spot following the third session. The final session saw Brinsfield become the first Pro Mod into the 6.4-second range at Stanton and led early qualifying with his 6.466/215.75 lap. It marked the first time that Brinsfield has ever led qualifying in a 1999 IHRA/Snap-On Tools event. His effort was bettered several pairs later and he fell to the second position.

He had to meet Mike Castellana in the first round. Brinsfield had to overcome an upset-minded Castellana in the first round and did so by a 6.483/214.62 to 6.619/208.26 margin. The victory moved him into the quarter-finals against the supercharged Thunderbird of Glenn May.

Aggravated by his sub-par reaction time of the previous round, Brinsfield stepped up in the quarters and bulbed May. He was able to successfully fend him by a 6.498/214.83 to 6.477/215.07 margin.

The semis afforded him a chance to extract revenge from Steve Vick, who beat him at the previous event in New York. Vick proved to be the better of the two for the second consecutive event as he narrowly beat Brinsfield off of the line. The race was nip and tuck until Brinsfield was forced to lift with handling problems.

This finish will no doubt improve his position in the points standings.

The Dylan Mortgage-sponsored team plans to continue his championship conquest at the IHRA MOPAR PARTS World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio during the weekend of August 26 -August 29. Brinsfield, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.
