Delayed Season Closer Completed by Larry Sullivan SHREVEPORT, La. - SUMMIT FastNews - The International Hot Rod Association wrapped up their 1998 season with rain-delayed eliminations in the World Finals at Red River Raceway. Doug Herbert, Tony Gillig, Shannon Jenkins, Jim Lape, and Larry Snyder closed out their seasons as winners in their respective professional categories. Herbert faced Top Fuel rookie Don Lampus in the final round and used his greater experience to win a "pedaling duel," both driver losing traction and having to get on and off the throttle to regain enough traction to get to the other end of the track. Paul Romine won the Top Fuel championship by advancing to the second round of eliminations, his second championship in two years. Gillig won a hotly contested Pro Stock battle, facing Steve Spiess in the final round. Gillig apparently came up just short in the season championship, however, Dave Seamon advancing to the semifinals to secure that title. Jenkins defeated Scotty Cannon to win in Pro Modified, resetting the elapsed time record to 6.316 seconds to take that honor away from season champion Cannon as well. Lape defeated 1998 Alcohol Funny Car champion Von Smith in a very close final round, using a 5.858 second elapsed time to better Smith's superior reaction time and a 5.948 second elapsed time by just 0.006 seconds. Snyder won his first Super Eliminator title ever by defeating Terry Munroe in the final round. In other final round contests: Anthony Bertozzi defeated Butch Sims to win Modified Eliminator; Ronnie Davis defeated 1998 champion Jeff Dobbins to win Top Sportsman; Joe Leach defeated Mike Fuqua to win Top Dragster; Toby Lang defeated Jeff Teuton to win Stock Eliminator; Sid Bonnecarrere defeated Bob Marshall to win Super Stock; Thomas Levatino defeated Mike Nicoll to win Quick Rod; Jimmy Pilgrim defeated Todd Stewart to win Super Rod; and Bob Gulitti defeated Rusty Hull to win Hot Rod.
