CHAPTICO, Md. - IHRA Pro Funny Car World Champion Scott Weney will defend his title behind the wheel of Billy Gibson's 99 Camaro. The car is owned by Billy's parents, Jacky and Judy Gibson of Chaptico, Maryland. Weney's previous ride, sponsored by Ken Sheetz, elected not to campaign the championship car in 2001.

This provides a great opportunity for the veteran chassis builder.

"The plan is to be at Rockingham and run the full-season," said Weney from his S&W Race Cars shop in Spring City, Pa. "We'll have sponsorship from G&H Jewelers and Jacky is working on additional partners.

"Kevin Palmer and my entire crew will return, which makes me very happy. The Gibson's will be the owners and my guys will work on the car. All that's changing is the car owner and that should be a plus in defending our championship."

Weney completed his 2000 Funny Car World Championship assault with three Summit Drag Racing Series national event victories and four runner-ups, making him easily one of the most feared Funny Car pilots on the circuit.

Gibson finished fifth in points last year and won his first IHRA national event at Budds Creek. He will also compete in NHRA's Federal Mogul Dragster class in 2001.

"I'm just happy to be able to defend my title and be a part of IHRA as they begin their partnership with SFX Motorsports," added Weney. "We've worked hard over the past five years and it's gratifying to know we're going to be a part of IHRA as it becomes more successful."
