Romine smokes tires in opening session of qualifying at CARQUEST Northern Nationals

STANTON, MI (July 31, 1998) -- Being the first pair out in the opening session of qualifying can be a real guessing game and Paul Romine and the CARQUEST team guessed wrong in round one of qualifying at the CARQUEST Northern Nationals. Romine lost traction just off the Mid-Michigan Motorplex starting line.

“On the burnout I knew the track was a bit slick and it really wasn’t surprising when it went up in smoke," Romine said. “After a couple cars got down the track though, it was awesome, but we just needed a little more bite on the starting line for our pass. We’ve got two more chances tomorrow though and we’re looking forward to that.”

After Friday qualifying, the CARQUEST Northern Nationals Top Fuel field produced the quickest Top Fuel speed in IHRA history (Don Lampus, 305.29) and the only driver other than Paul Romine to break into the 4.7-second zone for IHRA Top Fuel competition (Pat Dakin, 4.750).

Qualifying for the CARQUEST Northern Nationals at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex continues Saturday, August 1st with the final two sessions of qualifying, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. (EDT).
