ROCKINGHAM, NC - The Pro Mod team that calls itself the 'Graveyard Gang', runners-up at the season opener at Darlington, found themselves in a hole at the conclusion of the abbreviated qualifying portion of the IHRA's Holley Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway.

Tommy Gray, the Baltimore, MD-based owner and driver of the popular and colorful 'Undertaker' 1953 Corvette, put on a great sound and light show for the fans during Friday night's 'Night of Fire' festivities, and ran a very respectable 6.495/217.42, just .01 short of making the fast field. At that point, with two more opportunities to improve still to come, the 'Graveyard Gang' was still confident of making the show

The second attempt early on Saturday afternoon produced a slower 6.506/214.72, however, and unfortunately, that turned out to be Gray's last kick at the cadaver for the weekend. Heavy rains descended on the Rockingham area Saturday evening, forcing cancellation of the scheduled third qualifying round.

Gray said, "It's easy to speculate, but I believe we had a reasonable shot at making the show. We were working towards getting the set-up dialed in, but because of the rainout, we came up just one round short of seeing if we made the right call. It was frustrating, for sure, but we weren't the only ones affected. We had the same situation at Darlington, and some teams here this weekend took a hit there, too. At least we had a good run there, going to the finals."

Gray has already experienced the extremes of the game in just two races, so if the law of averages now work in his favor just a little, he, Doctor Death and Grim Reaper should be in for a horrifyingly good ride the rest of the way.

The next event on the IHRA tour will take place June 2-4, at Grand Bend Motorplex for the Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol.
