ROCKINGHAM, NC.- Make no bones about it, Top Fuel racer Bruce Litton is exactly where he wants to be headed into this weekend's rescheduled CARQUEST Autumn Nationals, the final stop on the IHRA Summit Championship Drag Racing Series. The veteran driver of the Wix Filters presented by the Top Dragster Driving Experience dragster is setting atop the points standings for the $200,000-to-win World Championship to be determined at the conclusion of the Rockingham, NC.-based event.
Litton recently ascended to the top of the Top Fuel points standings with his victory at the Mopar Parts World Finals in Shreveport, La. He entered the event in third place in the points, but reclaimed the top spot for the second time in the season when Clay Millican lost in the semis and he defeated Paul Romine in the final round.
"I always told the press last season when I led the points chase early that I wanted to be in the lead at the end of the season when it counted the most," explained Litton, who finished third in the 1999 IHRA Top Fuel points chase. "Here we are headed into Rockingham in the points lead and I feel great. I know that this will effectively put a bullseye on me, but that's okay. I like for us to be in control of our destiny and we certainly control that."
Litton certainly holds a good track record at Rockingham headed into this weekend's competition. In his last three visits to Rockingham Dragway, he has emerged victorious twice - once this season (Holley Spring Nationals) and in 1999 at the same event.
"I really can't say that we have some kind of advantage at Rockingham, but good things seem to happen for us when we come here," confided Litton. "We'll go out there and just do the best we can. We're not going to back off any because backing off didn't get us to where we are at today."
Litton only needs to outlast Romine and Millican to claim his first World Champion.
The Top Dragster Driving Experience has retained Litton's team to carry out their marketing program with WIX Filters. Top Dragster Driving Experience President Joel Collins feels the triangle marketing partnership between WIX Filters, his company and Litton's team provides a future example for other teams aspiring to run Top Fuel.
