ROCKINGHAM, NC-Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley rider Johnny Mancuso came from the number seven qualifying spot to ride to a runner up finish this weekend at the Holley Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway. Mancuso's '98 Nitro Harley got away from the Houston, TX.-based rider and crossed the centerline, and took the 330' cone with it to give Jay Turner an automatic win. Turner crossed the traps with a 6.654/ 179.59.

"I got scared there for a moment and decided to lift," explained Mancuso. "These bikes are beasts and you have to show them respect, if not, they'll bite you. I've encountered enough in the past, that I should know that very well."

Mancuso encountered another scary moment during the second round when he beat Doug Vancil in the second round and appeared to drift dangerously close to the retaining wall and actually tapped it. According to Mancuso, the wind was doing some nasty tricks in the traps. He added that there was an unexplainable turbulence in the area.

He reached the semis by beating Bill Furr in the first round.

Mancuso will next make the long trek from his hometown of Houston, Texas all the way to Great Bend, Ontario for the Mopar Parts Nationals. Long trips are no stranger to Mancuso, who went overseas to the "Land Down Under" to compete for the International Nitro Harley World Championship this winter. Mancuso will be looking to make the most of the trip, and come back to Texas with a victory.
