Lee looking to finish the year strong at "The Rock"
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - After three-straight final round finishes on the IHRA/eMax tour, Torco Pro Nitro Funny Car driver Paul Lee and the Rislone Engine Treatment/J&B Motorsports team are hoping to finish the year with a win during this weekend's UTI World Finals at "The Rock" in Rockingham, N.C. Lee, who enters the event sixth in points, has a shot at finishing in the top five with a late round finish.
Lee, from Bala Cynwyd, Pa., hopes to return to the form of their last IHRA event at Maryland International Raceway where they reached the finals and set low elapsed time of the meet.
"We just want to pick up where we left off in Maryland," said Lee. "Rockingham is a fun race and a good track to run at. We have four runner-ups this year, and we would really like to close the year with a win."
Team Owner Jeff McGaffic echoes Lee's statements.
"We just need to get back to where we were at in Maryland," commented McGaffic. "We're just going to race the track and take what it gives us. We're not trying to rotate the earth. We just want to be consistent like we were and Maryland and do our best. If we can do that, I think we'll be just fine."
Lee trails current No. 5 man in points Terry Haddock by two rounds entering the weekend. To overtake Haddock, Lee needs Haddock to go out in the first round and reach the finals.
"When we signed Rislone mid year, our goal was to run the last half of the season hard enough to finish in the top five," stated McGaffic. "Since we missed several races during the first half of the year, that was a pretty lofty goal when we made it. Over the past few races, we've made leaps and bounds as a team, and the results have shown. We hope things work out and we do get to finish in the top five, but at this point, we just want to finish the year with a win. That would be the ultimate way to thank our sponsors like Rislone, Allied Machine, Kimberly Clark and Cradin Auto Parts who have supported us all year."
Qualifying begins on Friday, and concludes with Saturday night's JCB "Night of Fire." Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
