ROCKINGHAM, N.C.- Dwayne Rice finished his season in fine style at the rescheduled IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals at Rockingham Dragway. The Sunoco Pro Stock driver advanced to the second round in his D.R. Excavating-sponsored Pontiac Firebird to earn his second career IHRA Pro Stock Top Ten finish.
Rice, who tested extensively before the Autumn Nationals in September, returned to the rescheduled event as the No. 10 qualifier on the strength of his 6.794/207.46. The Ohio-based racer improved to a 6.684/208.39 during Saturday's first qualifying session to move up to the No. 8 spot on the ladder. He returned for the final session to post a great 6.653/210.14 in his Firebird to move up to the No. 5 position. Rice would enjoy lane choice over Floyd Cheek going into the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
The opening round of eliminations began just past noon and Rice and Cheek were the third pair of cars to battle it out at 'the Rock'. Cheek left first on Rice with a .461 to .475 reaction time, but Rice drove around him to take the win with a 6.687/210.67 to Rice's off pace 6.80/192.03.
Rice lost lane choice for his second round battle with Jerry Yeoman by a scant 7-thousandth's of a second. Yeoman put Rice in the right lane for their second round battle and it may have cost him the race. Rice left first with a .454 light but got out of the groove at the 300-foot mark. By the time he collected his Pontiac, Yeoman drove by him and on to the victory with a 6.667/211.79 to Rice's 6.748/209.69.
