Brinsfield Nails Opponent On Tree, Falls Short At Finish During CARQUEST Autumn Nationals
ROCKINGHAM, NC-- Dale Brinsfield had admittedly had slower than par reaction times during some races in the 1999 season. The veteran Pro Modified racer from Greensboro, NC., had no such problem in the first round against his chassis builder Tommy Mauney. However, Brinsfield didn't have the necessary muscle on the top end to fend off the former two-time champion.
"We fixed one problem and replaced it with another one," explained Brinsfield. "This is a thing that is sometimes embarrassing, but sometimes you can't help it. We'll hammer down and regroup and get ready for the next race."
Qualifying was worth talking about, as Brinsfield's first run was an interesting one. He made the program with a respectable 6.523 elapsed time, but the real shock of the event was a 227.15 mph blast. The speed was declared a bogus one as Shannon Jenkins followed with a 230 mph blast. The elapsed time was retained, but the speed was dropped from all in the category for that session. He improved during the evening session with a 6.463/217.44. He was the eighth the quickest.
Brinsfield didn't improve during the third session, posting a 6.487/217.44. He went into the final session as the eighth quickest. He stepped up during the final session with a 6.438/214.56. He laid claim to the 11th spot and that paired him against Mauney in the first round.
Brinsfield had a .05 holeshot and that was enough to buy him some time, but on the top end, Mauney passed for a 6.447/218.92 to an off-pace 6.651/210.57.
The Dylan Mortgage-sponsored team plans to continue his championship conquest at the IHRA Express Auto Parts.Com President's Cup in Budds Creek, Md., during the weekend of October 1-3. Brinsfield, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday.
