Quain Stott Wins Prestigious Don Carlton Memorial Award At IHRA Awards Banquet
ASHEVILLE, NC— The late Pro Stock drag racing legend Don Carlton had a knack for making the best of his underdog status and winning races. Inman, South Carolina Pro Modified racer Quain Stott developed that same kind of drive and determination during the 1997 IHRA Snap-On Tools tour. That was clearly evident to the membership contingent of the IHRA as they voted Stott the recipient of the Don Carlton Memorial Award during last evening’s annual world championship awards ceremony held at the historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina.
Stott had no idea that he was a finalist for the award.
“It caught me off guard,” explained Stott. “To be compared h a racer like Don Carlton, who was one of my childhood heroes, is beyond any thought that I can imagine. When I got up on the stage, I choked up with tears. It'’s times like this that make going through the rough ones worth it.”
The 1997 season was a dream come true for Stott. He managed to land his first sponsor, Bug Eater, and combined with the tuning talents of his brother Mitchell Stott to finish 5th in the IHRA Snap-On Tools Pro Modified points. Stott also managed to reach two finals rounds.
